Charity Partners
An important part of the Autonomous culture is to give something back. We allocate 5% of annual profits linked to partner shares to charitable causes. The funds are administered by the Autonomous Research Charitable Trust (registered UK charity number 1137503). The ARCT has been established in accordance with industry best practise, with both an external independent trustee on the board and a formal conflicts of interest policy (available upon request).
The ARCT's core aims are as follows:
- To help disadvantaged people get a step up in life. Our focus is therefore upon people rather than wildlife conservation or ecology.
- To empower people to improve the quality of their lives. We are therefore naturally drawn to projects based around education opportunities or helping with start-up business ventures.
- To focus our resources upon a small number of key partner charities – both in London and abroad – where we feel we can make a difference and establish long-term relationships.
- Our involvement is not simply about giving money. The partners of Autonomous will also be active in mentoring, providing business and career advice and in a variety of other hands-on roles.
Autonomous Research Charitable Trust's Core Partners
ARCT's international partner charities are Tusk Trust (www.tusk.org) and Plan UK (www.plan-uk.org). The London partner charity is One Degree.
- Tusk Trust. The ARCT is working together with Tusk in the north of Kenya. Over the next 12 months, the ARCT is financing logistical support and infrastructure costs of a livestock trading scheme. The ARCT's funding will facilitate the purchase of approximately 5,800 cattle annually from 12 conservancies within Isiolo, Samburu, Laikipia and Marsabit. The project is intended to change the mindset of pastoralists so that they may ultimately improve their own livelihoods through the promotion of better rangeland management and derive direct benefits from livestock trading and pursuing alternative investment. Tusk has been supporting communities, environmental education and wildlife conservation in Africa since 1990. Its current portfolio of 40 projects spread across 17 countries is designed to deliver sustainable development in conjunction with greater protection for wildlife and natural habitats and to help alleviate poverty and improve education amongst the rural communities who live alongside wildlife.

- Plan UK. The ARCT is working with Plan UK in Uganda. Over the next 12 months, the ARCT is financing Plan UK's project to build and equip a new classroom block, sanitation facilities for 520 pupils and complete the existing classroom block at St Kizito Primary School in Luweero District. Plan will also train teachers to improve the quality of teaching and form a School Management Committee and Parent Teacher Association to ensure that the project is sustainable. Founded over 70 years ago, Plan is one of the oldest children's development organisations in the world. It works in 48 developing countries with 3.5 million families and communities each year. Plan is independent, with no religious, political or governmental affiliations.

-
One Degree. The ARCT is currently the sole source of funding for the One Degree charity in London. One Degree empowers students from disadvantaged backgrounds by developing their self-belief and transforming their academic performance. One Degree is results orientated, aiming to maximise the GCSE results achieved by the students participating in the program each year. The boys and girls that are selected from the Crest Academy in Neasden engage in a 12 week program of intense maths and English tuition as they approach their final exams. Teaching is conducted over weekends – the mentors that volunteer come from professional backgrounds (law, accounting, banking, consulting). In 2010 only 20% of the 40 students were predicted A-C grades including maths and English while 72% actually achieved this threshold. These results meant the Crest Academy in 2010 went from being amongst the worst performing schools in London, to the most improved (and 2nd most improved in the country). This success as well as the moral and social support embedded in the program has helped many of the children to move on to higher education and in many cases transform their future, potentially avoiding a life of crime. The ARCT is very proud of One Degree's achievements with a number of the Autonomous partners also engaged as mentors.
